The National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS): This scheme is established in 2008, and the aim of this Scheme is to provide financial assistance to students from economically weaker backgrounds, helping them continue their education. This initiative encourages deserving students to pursue their education at the secondary stage and beyond.
Each year, the scheme offers 1 lakh new scholarships to students in class IX and renews these scholarships for students continuing their studies in classes X to XII. The scholarships are available for study in State Government, Government-aided, and Local body schools. As of April 1, 2017, the annual scholarship amount has been increased to Rs. 12,000 (previously, it was Rs. 6,000 per year).
The scheme has received a significant boost, with the Cabinet’s approval for continuation from FY 2021-22 to FY 2025-26, with a total budget allocation of Rs. 1,827 crores.

Fresh Application Criteria For the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme.
The selection of students for the scholarship is conducted at the State/UT level through an entrance test, usually held in class VIII. Eligible students must pass the Mental Ability Test (MAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) to qualify. The criteria for selection are as follows:

Disbursement of National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme.
Since 2018-19, the entire process of the scholarship scheme has been integrated into the National Scholarship Portal (NSP). The Ministry of Education allocates funds for the scheme through the Annual Budget, which is then transferred to SBI—the designated implementing bank. The funds are disbursed directly into the students’ bank accounts using the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system through the Public Financial Management System (PFMS).
